THE OPPORTUNITY: Art Director (Freelance)
REPORTS TO: Creative Director
LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA - Hybrid
Headquartered in Los Angeles, CA with an office in New York, NY, Birdy Grey supports hybrid work for eligible roles. This role will work out of our DTLA office 2-3 days a week. This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
Birdy Grey is seeking an Art Director to help bring our creative vision to life. You will oversee multiple photoshoots and campaigns each quarter, collaborating with the Creative Director and Senior Creative Producer to execute innovative concepts. Your expertise in visual storytelling and strong leadership skills will ensure that all aspects of our campaigns – from art direction and styling to image selection – align with our brand identity.
Scope Of Responsibilities
- Lead multiple campaigns each quarter, from concept to execution, including collaborating with the Creative Director and Marketing Director to bring photos and videos to life.
- Act as a key cross-functional partner across creative, marketing, and product initiatives.
- Develop and maintain guidelines for various types of shoots.
- Provide art direction and extensive moodboards and assist with styling in both studio and lifestyle shoots.
- Support in pre-production by providing direction for locations, models, props and everything in between.
- Create extensive shot lists inspired by high-level moodboards, working in conjunction with Creative Producer
- Oversee image selection for all shoots in collaboration with the Creative Director, reviewing and approving final images to ensure they meet the brand's standards for quality, composition, and style.
- Oversee and direct freelancers on shoots.
- Collaborate with the social media team to create compelling social content, as needed.
- Act as the final approver for color correction and retouching of all products, providing insightful suggestions and guidance.
- Alongside the Creative Producer, help oversee budgets for shoots and campaigns to ensure cost effectiveness.
Experience / Requirements
- 6+ years of Art Director experience, preferably in a fast-paced e-commerce environment.
- BA in design, photography, visual arts, digital media, or a related field.
- Proficient with Apple products, CaptureOne, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Workspace, and KeyNote.
- Experience with DTC apparel, particularly in menswear and/or womenswear brands.
- On-set experience (specifically with live image selects and color correcting).
- Knowledge of best e-commerce practices.
- Possess an elevated, fashion-oriented eye for photography, lighting, and retouching.
- Strong communication, organizational, and time management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strategic thinker who brings fresh, innovative ideas to life, comfortable with taking initiative to lead projects.
- Proactive problem solver, effective in troubleshooting and escalating issues as needed.
- Hardworking and willing to take on any task, big or small, with an entrepreneurial spirit that thrives in dynamic, fast-paced environments.
