We are looking for an experienced Character Artist to bring creatures and characters to life on our flagship title, Dauntless! In this role, you will use your experience to collaborate with our art team to create characters and game-ready assets. You will help drive the quality and accountability of Characters to meet the visual goals of the project.
The ideal candidate has a strong artistic background, is passionate about creating high-quality assets that help improve the visual quality of our game worlds, and is a strong collaborator who is willing to solve a variety of production challenges.
Responsibilities:
- Sculpt, texture, and retopologize a new generation of Dauntless Behemoths, Characters, and Creatures that are consistent with the visions of the Art Director and Behemoth Designers.
- Set high-quality standards while taking into account the technology constraints and other discipline's needs.
- Help contribute to documentation and style guides, as well as provide feedback to external art partners.
- Set quality standards and contribute to the studio character art community of practice to raise the studio's quality bar.
- Collaborate with Designers and Animators on Behemoth development in a proxy-based, iterative workflow.
- Participate in research and development on latest industry tools, technologies, and workflows.
Required Qualifications:
- Several years of 3D character creation experience, including multiple shipped game titles.
- Solid understanding of stylized anatomy, sculpting of clothing, and hard surface skills to achieve the visual look established by the Art Direction of the game.
- Ability to accurately capture a design's essence without the need for detailed orthographic images.
- Excellent Zbrush sculpting and organic modeling skills.
- Experience in building game meshes for animation.
- Experience in one or more major 3D software packages (Maya, Max, Modo, ZBrush).
- Experience working within an iterative development process.
- Strong texturing skills and experience with PBR and materials using Substance Painter.
- Ability to work side-by-side with Concept Artists, Animators, Designers, and Engineers to identify and solve problems collaboratively.
- Understanding of color and values to help elevate the overall quality of the work.
- A strong portfolio demonstrating your in-game character artwork to very high standards.
- Must be residing in Canada.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience with Unreal Engine.
- Ability to do some concept design work.
Pay Transparency
Phoenix Labs believes in pay equity and we welcome conversations with candidates on how their salary expectations align with our established ranges. As you progress through the interview process, it may be determined that your experience might align better with a higher/lower level of position than you originally applied for and, should that happen, we will discuss the new pay range with you before moving forward with additional interviews or an offer.
Phoenix Labs covers the cost of basic medical for employees and their dependents, in addition to offering generous Dental and Paramedical Services. For 2023, we match employees' contributions to their RRSP up to 5% of their salaries. We provide employees with a flexible vacation plan, all the Provincial Statutory holidays, and unlimited sick time.

Canada Pay Range
$115,000 — $170,000 CAD
