Bad Robot Games is looking for an experienced and talented Lead VFX artist to drive the creation of stunning VFX for a new, unannounced IP. The ideal candidate has a great eye for real-time game VFX and team-leading skills such as mentoring, work planning, and providing feedback and direction. This candidate would have a strong mix of artistic and technical skills and loves innovating and creating memorable player experiences.
This role requires a portfolio submission demonstrating real-time game vfx.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Creates, designs, and implements particle effects using both static and animating 2D/3D elements.
- Creates complex 3D models, UV mapping, shaders, and simple animations when necessary.
- Places VFX across all areas of the game, including environmental VFX, gameplay VFX, and cinematics all while collaborating to ensure that VFX are implemented appropriately in the game engine.
- Fixes VFX-related bugs, and ensures that VFX assets are performant and optimized.
- Works with the Art Director and other creative leads to drive and maintain VFX direction for the game.
- Evaluates and experiments with techniques to improve pipelines, tools, and workflows.
- Prototypes effect concepts for gameplay as well as problem solves technical and artistic challenges collaboratively, assisting production across a variety of disciplines.
- Coaches, manages, and mentors VFX team members and drives tasks toward sprint and milestone deliverables.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
- Shipped at least 2 real-time game projects in Unreal at AAA quality and complexity.
- Has a keen eye for realism.
- Has a strong understanding of Unreal 5’s Niagara, Material Editor and Blueprints and a mastery of relevant software packages such as Houdini, Substance, EmberGen, Photoshop, After Effects, and Maya.
- In-depth knowledge of technology, terminology, and techniques of game art development, including an awareness of design and performance considerations.
- Is highly collaborative within and beyond the art team, and is able to identify gaps in communication and process.
- Has experience managing VFX artists and being accountable for their growth, communicating feedback, addressing performance, and advocating for their success.
- All of our roles require up to 10% air travel. Examples include Studio/Team Offsites, Team/Studio Events, etc.

Annual Salary Range: $168,500 - $172,500
