Position Summary
The Exhibition Designer plays an integral role shaping visitor experience and supporting the museum’s mission through exhibition design. Collaborating with multiple departments, the Exhibit Designer helps develop, manage, and maintain the value of the visitor experience through environmental design and visual communication. Working with department leadership the Exhibit Designer will be responsible for designing exhibitions, permanent collection installations, and way-finding signage from conceptualization and design through completion. They must work creatively to utilize 2-dimensional design work and processes to enhance
3-dimensional experiences. They must be able to create an engaging museum experience through innovative and relevant forms of presenting art, artifacts, media, and didactic information.
Essential Functions
- Conceptual design development for exhibitions and other museum projects, including exhibition identities/personalities, planning, spatial design, graphic design, visitor flow and implementation
- Supervise production and fabrication by contractors, vendors, and other contributors to the construction and installation process of individual projects
- Manage and maintain multiple projects of various scopes simultaneously
- Prepare and plan for presentations to communicate design concepts to staff. This includes building 2-D and 3-D models, generating graphics and construction drawings
- Support the continued development of and adherence to Autry design standards
- Collaborate and problem solve with various departments to provide a pleasant, interesting, and cohesive learning experience for visitors, that also meet the museum conservation standards
- On occasion, oversee the design and adaptation of temporary and traveling exhibitions
- The Autry Museum reserves the right to add or change duties at any time
Minimum Qualifications
- BA in design, studio arts, or museum studies
- 3–5 years’ experience in exhibition design for cultural institutions
- Fluency in Adobe Creative suite and Vectorworks
- Experience building models (physical and digital) and sketches for development and presentations
- Experience with typography, printmaking, interior design, or furniture building
- Experience working with vendors to oversee final production of materials
- Experience with delivering completed projects on time and within budget required
- Ability to communicate design presentations clearly, persuasively, diplomatically, and professionally in a team setting required.
- Understanding of ADA and Universal design guidelines strongly preferred
- Project management experience strongly preferred
WORKING CONDITIONS
Requires extended use of computer. Involves some periods of standing, walking, stooping, and bending. Extended work hours as needed.
