What You'll Do
Epic Games seeks Senior Environment Artists for our Cary, North Carolina studio to lead teams building some of the best-looking environments and props for video games in the industry.
In this role, you will
- Work closely with the art director, game designers, and other team members to understand project requirements and contribute creative ideas that enhance the visual and gameplay aspects of the project.
- Transform 2D concept art into fully game-ready assets, demonstrating a deep understanding of the transition from static images to dynamic, interactive gameplay elements.
- Adhere to strict design limitations and guidelines to ensure seamless integration of assets into the overall gameplay experience.
- Utilize advanced texture pipelines, incorporating Substance Designer/Painter expertise to create both 1-to-1 mapped assets and seamless tiling textures.
- Create assets that allow for proper gameplay, considering collision and gameplay feature generation.
- Act as point of contact to achieve design and art direction goals as it pertains to building game art.
- Collaborate with project leadership to craft systemic solutions that benefit the game.
- Utilize 3D art tools like Max, Maya, or ZBrush for the creation and refinement of 3D assets, ensuring that levels maintain a manageable frame rate while minimizing any loss of visual fidelity across the game world.
What we’re looking for
Minimum 5 years of experience as a Senior Environment Artist in the video game industry and with all the following:
- Demonstrated expertise in shipping at least three titles as a Senior Artist across various platforms.
- Proficient in utilizing leading game engines like CryEngine and Unreal Engine for asset creation.
- Mastery of ZBrush for sculpting intricately detailed high-poly assets and textures, ensuring immersive game environments.
- Extensive experience with 3DS MAX or MAYA for the creation and refinement of 3D assets, adhering to stringent budgets without compromising visual fidelity.
- Proficiency in crafting textures using Substance Painter and Designer, with a deep understanding of PBR and procedural material workflows.
- Familiarity with production tools such as Jira and Shotgrid for streamlined project management.
- Ability to translate 2D concept art seamlessly into fully realized 3D game assets, ensuring artistic vision is faithfully represented.
- Proven track record of delivering art assets that maximize platform capabilities while staying within strict performance limitations, catering to a wide range of platforms including lower-end hardware.
Portfolio/Reel Requirement:
Applicants must submit a portfolio of both personal and professional work, with clear descriptions of contributions, demonstrating a strong understanding of color theory and technical expertise in architectural and prop modeling, lighting, world-building techniques, including both excellent scene composition and spatial skills; a firm understanding of high fidelity texture creation of any given surface; experience with physical based rendering and material creation; proficiency with both hard surface and organic modeling techniques, alongside comprehensive breakdowns of 3D assets showcasing efficient wireframe topology with regard to both high and low poly modeling with efficient utilization of UV space; organized and legible Substance Designer node graphs, where applicable, in order to illustrate material creation processes and an understanding of procedural workflows.
