In this role, you will work closely with the art and design teams to create high-quality concept art that defines the look and feel of the game’s outdoor spaces. With a strong grasp of composition, lighting, and environmental storytelling, you’ll develop detailed, atmospheric landscapes, including terrain, foliage, and flora, that inspire and guide the production of in-game assets. This position is ideal for an artist passionate about crafting expansive, imaginative worlds with touches of the fantastical or futuristic.
Responsibilities:
- Create detailed concept art for a variety of exterior environments, from vast landscapes to intimate outdoor settings, that align with the game’s visual style and artistic direction.
- Design unique natural and architectural elements, including foliage, terrain, rocks, and flora, to enrich the visual storytelling and atmosphere of each outdoor space.
- Develop sketches, line art, and fully-rendered concepts that capture composition, lighting, mood, and scale to communicate the atmosphere and story of each environment.
- Collaborate with level designers, environment artists, and other team members to ensure each exterior concept serves gameplay and narrative objectives.
- Produce orthographic views, reference sheets, and detailed breakdowns to guide the 3D environment team in translating concepts into game-ready assets.
- Explore variations in terrain, foliage types, and natural textures to create diverse and visually engaging landscapes.
- Maintain consistency in style and quality across all environment concepts, iterating on designs based on feedback from the art director and other team members.
Requirements:
- Proven experience in 2D concept art with a focus on environment design, and a portfolio showcasing high-quality exterior environments.
- Strong understanding of spatial design, perspective, composition, and lighting, with the ability to create immersive, visually compelling landscapes.
- Proficiency in digital painting software such as Photoshop, with the ability to produce polished, detailed concepts.
- Ability to work from a creative brief and integrate feedback effectively, adapting designs to meet project goals.
- Experience working collaboratively within a production environment to ensure concepts align with gameplay and technical requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience designing stylized or imaginative exterior environments, particularly for games or animation.
- Familiarity with the production pipeline for 3D environments and an understanding of how concept art guides asset creation.
- Interest in crafting expansive, immersive worlds with the ability to create natural elements like foliage, terrain, and flora that feel grounded yet imaginative.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across multiple departments.
