What You'll Do
Epic is looking for an experienced Environment Art Lead to work with our environment team on projects under the Fortnite IP. The Environment Art Lead will lead and collaborate with multidisciplinary artists to create and maintain the Environment vision for the game. You’ll have a balance of technical capability, creative thinking, and a strong ability to lead a team in developing content for our POIs, Biomes, and prop sets. Working closely with the Environment Art Director, you are responsible for: maintaining the artistic direction of the world, conducting reviews, providing feedback to the team, and collaborating with Design Leads, while holding the highest quality standards.
In this role, you will
- Be highly creative - ideate and help drive the Seasonal Art Direction forward Represent the Art Director when necessary in meetings and discussions
- Work with Discipline Leads and Outsource partners to keep team momentum, and deliver engaging player experiences
- Lead development of a group of Environment Artists and Level Designers, helping identify great ideas and steering them through the production pipeline
- Implement the high-level goals of Environment Art Direction; help guide artists and implementation toward shipping
- Ensure the core narrative goals and visual pillars of the game are being achieved
- In conjunction with the Art Director, deliver constant feedback to a fast moving team
- Represent the Art Director when necessary in meetings and discussions
What we're looking for
- You’re passionate, collaborative, innovative, and solutions-based; you’re humble, low ego, and know how to represent or rally the team with confidence. These traits can equal success at Epic and influence all that we do
- Strong understanding of Environment Art processes for games, architecture, integration of natural and manmade environments (e.g. You have a proven record of creating innovative environments that feel fresh but also have mass appeal)
- Strong understanding of Unreal Engine, and a variety of DCC tools, not limited to but including various 3D packages, Substance Designer and Painter, Zbrush
- Experience working with internal concept and development teams, whether local, remote, or vendors. The ability to receive, deliver, and implement clear feedback is a must
- Experience working with both Level and Game Designers around core game loops
- Deep understanding of what makes for an engaging player experience (Bonus: You’ve shipped games on multiple platforms, including mobile is a plus)
- Understanding of performance and optimization, and smart approaches to maximizing asset reuse to deliver an optimal experience at a high level of finish
- Deep knowledge of the technical aspects of game art creation - You will need a strong understanding of art fundamentals, lighting, composition, art styles, and color theory
- Experience as a Lead overseeing a large art development team, including an ability to mentor, and promote an environment of continued growth, both professionally and personally
- A highly organized individual, with experience working with Production to appropriately scope tasks
