Decorative Art Assistant, Part-Time (2 days per week)
Position Description
PELLE is seeking a part-time Decorative Art Assistant who will be a part of our design company’s skilled production team specializing in the manufacture of custom and high-end lighting fixtures. Responsibilities include the preparation and skillful application of proprietary decorative art techniques as well as hand-crafted fabrication of parts that are incorporated into fixtures built to top quality standards. In this role, you must be artistically adept and skilled with your hands and be able to do the work consistently well with concentration, accuracy, and attention to detail. Prior work experience in art or demonstrated technical ability in representational painting and/or sculpture is a requirement. We welcome applicants who are passionate about crafting beautiful work and would like to be a part of a professional work environment with a creative, friendly, and team-oriented studio culture. This is an on-site position, and you must be present to work 2 full days out of the work week in our Red Hook Brooklyn studio, Mondays-Fridays from 9am-5:30pm.
Position Responsibilities
- Skillful application of art techniques developed in our studio, such as hand-painting onto glass, canvas, paper, wood and metal; Gilding and silvering; as well as other art-related production work
- Metal soldering and metal finishing with precision and skill
- Casting paper using company methods; Fabrication of molds and prototypes
- Preparation, maintenance, and cleanup of all work processes on a daily basis
- Meet production deadlines to ensure all orders are shipped on time
- Work well independently and be able to discern levels of quality in your own work; Adhere to high standards of quality and craft
- Careful handling of all fragile materials and parts – glass, paper, finished metal, and decorative parts in the studio.
- Use of art supplies, tools and studio/shop equipment with common sense, safety, respect,caution and care
- Clean and neat upkeep of physical workspace, studio tools and equipment; End of day sweep up
- Regularly coordinate and communicate with the production team and supervisors
- Document accurate updates and procedures into company binders
- Assist with checking/ordering/calling for art supplies and services if/when necessary
- Professional and positive attitude towards the work and team
Position Requirements
- Strong artistic ability and technical knowledge in representational painting and/or sculpture through portfolio or prior work experience in a related field
- Wood shop/Metal shop experience and knowledge of hand tools is preferred
- Ability to be self-organized and accurately follow methods and instructions well
- Ability to stand for long periods of time doing manual labor
- Physically able to lift and handle large and heavy items, up to 50lbs, on a regular basis
- Possess on-the-job creativity and problem-solving skills
- Willingness to learn and to adapt since duties may slightly alter depending on the production needs of the studio
- 2-3 Professional references
- High school diploma or equivalency
WORK SCHEDULE & PAY
The Decorative Art Assistant is a Part-Time position in our Brooklyn studio for two days or 15 hours per week. The hourly pay rate is $28/hour for a 7.5 hour workday. The studio is open Mondays-Fridays, 9am-5:30pm. There is some flexibility in the beginning with the days you select, however, we require a consistent weekly work schedule once your days are selected. No evenings, weekends, or company holidays. Pay period is weekly.
