Duties
As a highly skilled expert in collections management procedures and protocols, responsible for the physical care, accountability, processing and packing of all collections, including loans, located at NMAI-DC.
In This Position, You Will
- Act as the designated representative for registration, collections management, and conservation in the management of collections in NMAI custody at the NMAI-DC location, whether loaned or part of NMAI’s permanent collection.
- Oversee the safe packing, transport, movement, and handling of objects in NMAI custody at NMAI-DC.
- Serve as liaison to the Director, Office of the Physical Plant and Facilities Manager regarding the proper maintenance of the exhibit halls, staging, and storage areas. Formulates and implements integrated pest management program and recommends methods of protection for collections during construction projects.
- Assure that the inventory records are maintained and updated, including digital images of installations NMAI’s collections and loaned items as needed.
- Represent the Museum to representatives of the Native American community, tribal officials, other museums and galleries, national and international governments, private foundations or cultural institutions, and scholars of all disciplines, usually through specialized tours of NMAI-DC. Serves on SI wide committees regarding collections management issues.

GRADE 11 - Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service.
For this position, specialized experience is defined as experience working
in museum registration and museum collections management responsible for the physical care, accountability, processing and packing of all collections including loans.
GRADE 12 -
Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service.
For this position, specialized experience is defined as experience working independently in museum program administration, applying museum collections management procedures and protocols and responsible for the safety and maintenance of museum collections items and loans.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
